Nottingham Writers Club

Go Back to A Guide To Creative Writing

When I first came to Howden I joined the U3A (University of the third age) Classes for retired gentlefolk like myself. Angela Cornbrough ran the group and through her guidance, I became a member of The Nottingham Writers Group. That was back in 2013 and although Angela left and returned to her native home of Bristol I maintained the U3A group as its leader and encouraged people to submit an entry for the NWC annual writing competition. As a remote member of the group, you can submit work to all sorts of writing competitions all through the year. It does not cost much to become a remote member and you can submit as many or as few entries in the various competitions. It is the oldest writing club in England that still has its doors and membership lists open so a great wealth of writing talent has graced its member roles over the years. Below is a copy of the Quarterly magazine that members receive and I hope that you will find some inspiration within it and may be tempted to join the group and see if you win some of those competitions that I was telling you about.

Work Submitted to Competitions

The prose competition is for a story based on a common saying these days

My NWC archive is in a terrible state so as moreof my submissions emerge from the bottomless pit that is my 4 Gig hard drive I  will post them here. Not to show what a great writer I am but how I persevere despite not always showing any potential of becoming the next million-copy best-seller writer.
